Vegan Travel Tips

  • Before you know it, summer will be behind us. While the weather is good, pack up your car with vegan snacks and hit the road! Car + Plastic GardenThe Vegan Mom came up with a list of 15 vegan cooler essentials. Her ideas are especially helpful if you’re traveling with some little ones.
  • For more travel snack inspiration, check out the guest post Diary of A Vegan wrote for The Blissful Chef. She put together a list of food staples for international adventures.
  • JL from JL Goes Vegan also has some advice on what to pack for a summer vacation. But that’s not all! Check out her vacation recipes.
  • Does the idea of traveling as a vegan stress you out? Karol from Ridiculously Extraordinary offers up some simple and healthy meal ideas for vegan travelers. I don’t agree with his opinion on what to do if you order vegan food that turns out to contain animal products (he says eat it anyway or find someone who will), but there is some good info in his post.Berlin Apartment
  • Rather than look around for vegan-friendly restaurants, some vegans prefer to book accommodations with a kitchen and make their own meals when away from home. The Tropical Vegan shared some of her travel meal ideas, like black bean burgers and falafels.
  • If you’re a raw vegan who likes to travel, be sure to read Natasha’s tips for being raw on the road. She suggests stocking up on homemade trail mixes, dried fruits, seasoned nuts and seeds, and dehydrated crackers. If you’re a green smoothie fan, find out how you can enjoy a green drink in the air, despite airport securities strict liquid restrictions.
  • Before planning your veggie vacation, read some of the tips recently published by the Examiner, Vegan Around the World blog and Detroit Free Press.

On the Road but Staying Connected to the Kitchen

Makings of a Soup

Makings of a Soup

Food is more than something to eat. Food is love. Food is culture. Food is life. Food is meant to be shared.

If I eat at restaurants too often, I start to feel disconnected from food. I like to make my own meals. I like watching a bag of vegetables turn into a beautiful soup or salad. I like cooking with people, and watching them cook. People who cook from the heart, without recipes and measuring cups, inspire me.

Have you Heard of Utrecht?

Utrecht, Netherlands

After visiting Amsterdam, we took the train to Utrecht, a nearby city packed with lots of students, bikes and cute shops. It’s basically a mini Amsterdam, without the overwhelming presence of the red light district, drugs and tourists. In Utrecht, we found another vegan squat cafe, lots of bio shops, and made friends with Miffy at the super cute Dick Bruna museum.

Vegan Shopping Made Easy at Vega-Life in Amsterdam

Vega-Life Store

Vega-Life, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

It’s always such a treat to visit an all vegan store. It’s not everyday us vegans have the chance to walk into a shop and turn off the part of our brain that’s usually making a guess about whether or not a product contains animal ingredients and judging if it’s worth flipping over to read the label. In a vegan store, we can shop for food without examining the fine print and get excited about spotting cute shoes without having to worry about the possibility of leather insoles. Everything is fair game. And it’s such a lovely feeling! This is why we made a special trip to Vega-Life, Amsterdam’s all vegan store.

Veggin’ Out at the Vegalicious HQ

Vegan Strawberry Tarts with Soy Yoghurt & Cashew Cream

Vegan Strawberry Tarts with Soy Yogourt and Cashew Cream

When we arrived at the Amsterdam airport, we received a warm greeting from Harald, the talented photographer behind the camera at Vegalicious. Harald does a fantastic job capturing the beauty of his wife Chris’ unique vegan recipes, all of which are available for free on the Vegalicious blog.

We had the pleasure of staying with Chris and Harald at their home in Almere, the Netherlands. Upon introduction, they dubbed us their little test bunnies and immediately started feeding us Chris’ delicious vegan creations. Our first taste of Vegalicious talent came in the form of vegan strawberry tarts with soy yogourt and cashew cream. We enjoyed them in the garden with tea and coffee.

Secret Society of Vegans Giveaway – Closed

Back in May, we were running around London, eating all the vegan food in sight. We stopped by Vx, an all vegan store and home to the Secret Society of Vegans, where we bought some sweets and SSOV swag. We wrote about visiting Vx but realize not everyone who reads our blog will have a chance to travel to London in the near future (if you do, you have to visit too!). We want to bring a little piece of Vx to you! That’s why we’re so happy to be partnering with Vx to giveaway one of their Secret Society of Vegans shirts.

What can a Vegan eat in Cape Town, South Africa?

Vegan Food in South Africa by Maria the Vegan World Trekker

Tofu Scramble in Cape Town, South Africa

Maria from the Vegan World Trekker blog is here to share news of all of the wonderful food she discovered while visiting Cape Town, South Africa in 2009.

A few years ago I traveled to South America. The highlight of the trip was a stop to Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia region of Argentina. Prior to heading home, the plane made a stop at the southernmost tip of the continent, Tierra De Fuego or the town of Ushaia.

Having visited the tip of South American fueled my passion to do likewise in Africa. The destination for my African journey last year, was Cape Town and the surrounding area. Cape Town is filled with hostels, a backpacker’s dream. They are pretty inexpensive too!

How to Order Vegan Food at Any Restaurant

Buffet picks

Buffet Restaurant, Florianopolis, Brazil

Whether you’re backpacking for a few months, going on a short vacation or driving from city to city on a road trip, chances are you’ll be eating at least some of your meals at restaurants. I’m also willing to bet not all of the restaurants you choose will be strictly vegan or even vegetarian. It would be great if every city had a veggie restaurant but that’s not how things are today. Even if there’s a veg-friendly restaurant in the city you’re visiting, it may not be nearby when hunger strikes. So the question is: how do you order food at a restaurant that doesn’t cater to vegans and may not understand your preferences.
