Vegan Travel Tips

  • Health Travels Booth in Toronto AirportVegNews assures us things are looking up for vegans flying during the holiday season. More and more vegan options are popping up in airports, and more airlines are offering vegan and vegetarian meals.
  • The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) just released the results of a study that found 82% of major US airport restaurants now offer at least one low-fat, high-fiber, cholesterol-free vegetarian entrée, up from 79% last year.
  • If you’re nervous about keeping up your healthy vegan lifestyle while traveling for the holidays, check out these 10 tips from the Healthy Voyager.
  • Sherri from Vegan Nosh has some advice on what vegan food items you can get through airport security.
  • If you’re traveling by car, rather than plane, check these road trip snack ideas from Sarah at The Ordinary Vegetarian blog.
  • Heather from Healthy Vegan Recipes delivers more great vegan travel advice this month, bringing us tips for cooking on the road without oil. She’s also started a discussion about whether or not vegans who choose healthy meals are missing out.
  • This month I was introduced to The Veggie Bus, an online resource put together by a bunch of “hardcore vegetarians who are traveling the world (well Asia to start with) seeking the finest (and cheapest) veggie cuisine from China, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.”
  • Do you have vegan travel tips to share? Submit your best tips for a chance to win a Kiss My Face gift pack from the Tomorrow Austin blog. You can enter until January 11, 2011!

Genesis Today Juice Giveaway – Closed

Genesis Today Juices

Genesis Today Juices

John and I are back in Canada and currently hanging out in Victoria, British Columbia. Before we return to “real life” and get back to working full time, we’re taking a month to relax, unwind from our travels, and give our bodies some extra love and care. We’ve set a goal to do 30 days of hot yoga (we’re already half way there!!) and refresh our bodies with an overload of fruits, veggies and healthy homemade meals. Given our current state of mind and health goals, it was a pleasant surprise to hear from Genesis Today with an offer to send us some samples of their new super fruit juices.

Our First Taste of Italian Dining

Restaurant

Le Piccole Vele Resturant

We were two weeks into our Italian getaway before we realized we hadn’t eaten in a single restaurant. With all the veggie restaurants closed for August, we weren’t tempted. We used this time to give our budget a break and cook our own meals. By the time we arrived in Sermoneta, which is about 40 minutes outside of Rome by train, we were ready to treat ourselves. We were delighted when our Couch Surfing host, Martine, suggested we eat at Le Piccole Vele (The Little Sales), a small restaurant located in the Lepini Mountains, just a short drive from Sermoneta. The picture above may not look like much, but it captures the scene. After driving up the mountain, we parked the car and came around a bend to see these lights shining from inside a small house, and smoke coming off the barbecue. We knew we were in for a special meal.

Vegan Pizza in Italy

vegan-pizza-mosaic

We ate a lot of pizza in Italy. Just look! Whenever we found ourselves craving pizza, there was a pizzeria anxious to serve one up. Pizza often seemed like the best option when we were out and about, sight seeing and away from any kitchen. They’re a great choice because they’re cheap, easy to share, and can be taken to a park for a simple picnic lunch.

Sweet Vegan Finds in Florence, Italy

Vegan Hazelnut and Chocolate Ice Cream by Coop

Coop Bene.si Chocolate and Hazelnut Gelato

Remember in my first post about Florence, when I said our Couch Surfing host, Helena, had a sweet tooth? Yea, well I wasn’t kidding. On our second night, she brought home a huge bag of her favourite vegan treats for us to sample. How generous! She started us off with some cacao e nocciola, chocolate and hazelnut, gelato from the Coop Bene.sì line, which, according to their website, is “a line of products with specific nutritional characteristics, capable of performing a particular function beneficial to the body.” Ice cream that’s good for your body? Sure, I’ll take it.

Vegan Fig and Peach Gelato at Perche No!

Fig and Peach Gelato from Perche No!

Italians love their food, and so do tourists visiting Italy. If Florence wasn’t totally jam packed with beautiful outdoor sculptures, buzzing piazzas (squares), river views, famous museums and churches, we would have probably eaten the city out of ice cream and pizza. Despite the welcomed distractions, we managed to make a good dent. Our Couch Surfing host was vegan, and had a real sweet tooth. As soon as we arrived in the city, she directed us to her favourite ice cream parlor, Perche No!. I’m known for choosing soy milk gelato, for the creaminess, but on this rare occasion opted for a scoop of fruity fig and peach, because you just don’t see these flavours everyday. They were fresh, light and oh so satisfying.

Us vegans are always packing snacks when we travel. That’s just what we do. One of my favoruite things to pack, because they’re just so darn easy to store and eat, are vegan bars. Closed for August, See you in September – Bologna, Italy

Stefino Vegan Ice Cream Shop

Stefino Veg

It wasn’t until we arrived in Bologna that we realized Italy really is closed in August. Our first hint was when a Couch Surfer wrote to us asking why we were coming in August when everyone is out of town on holidays, tourists fill the streets, and many of the shops and restaurants close their doors for the month. Well, we certainly didn’t plan for it. The reality of the situation came crashing down when we arrived at Stefino Veg, an all vegan ice cream parlor, only to find the door closed and a small sign saying the staff would be on holidays from August 6 to 18.
