Before visiting New York, I did a fair amount of research and asking around for recommendations. I knew there would be a lot of vegan options but it’s hard to comprehend just how many there are. BabyCakes NYC was one of the places I’d heard a lot of mixed reviews about. Despite what you hear, there are some places you just have to try for yourself. For me, this was one of them. BabyCakes may be well known for their cute cupcakes with that signature icing swirl, but I found something I liked even more.
BabyCakes deserves full credit for their ultra cute decor. From the window display to the hand written signs on the dessert counter, this little bakery has a whimsical vibe that little ones and grown ups can equally appreciate.
It may be a small bakery, but it will likely take any new comer a few minutes to do a 360 of the place and stand for a few minutes feeling overwhelmed with nothing but sweet choices.
After giving it some thought, we finally agreed on a mocha cupcake for John and a caramel crunch doughnut for me. It’s true what many people say, that the icing is the best part of the BabyCakes’ cupcakes. I found the cupcake dry and not very sweet, but John liked. The icing was nice though, and did had the great mocha flavour it promised.
The doughnut, well, it blew my mind. I savoured every single bite, almost ignoring the sharing policy John and I have committed to. It was so moist and topped with delicious ingredients like soft caramel, icing and mini chocolate chips. I wasn’t surprised by the sign noting the doughnuts won BabyCakes a best vegan dessert in New York award after only six months on the shelf. My only complaint: it was too small! At least I was able to save room for dinner at Foodswings, right?
If you’re in New York, I can’t imagine not giving this place a try. It is an all vegan bakery, with darling decor, and a variety of sweets. You’re bound to find something you like.
They had pretty memorabilia for sale. I would have liked to buy a t-shirt but if I spend money on clothing, that would leave less for food….

If you do make it to BabyCakes, before or after picking up a treat, go around the corner and visit MooShoes. They have a great selection of footwear, purses, t-shirts and cookbooks. Just like their popular online store, everything is vegan.
When we were there, they were selling the Foster-iffic Peppermint Rescue Chocolate bar. I was keeping my eye out for the Peanut Butter Pit Bull but didn’t see it anywhere. Don’t feel too bad for us though, we found our fare share of desserts.
