Food is more than something to eat. Food is love. Food is culture. Food is life. Food is meant to be shared.
If I eat at restaurants too often, I start to feel disconnected from food. I like to make my own meals. I like watching a bag of vegetables turn into a beautiful soup or salad. I like cooking with people, and watching them cook. People who cook from the heart, without recipes and measuring cups, inspire me.
We’ve cooked many beautiful meals while on the road. And had the pleasure of enjoying many meals prepared by the people who have hosted us. Homemade meals may not always be as pretty as restaurant meals, but they often taste better. There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with making a meal for yourself, or having one made especially for you.
We may be living out of backpacks, moving around every few days, and working with a small budget, but that doesn’t stop us from making meals from scratch. It’s not always the easiest or cheapest option but we make it work when we can. It’s a good day when we have the chance to visit a farmer’s market and buy a bag full of local produce to take back to our kitchen of the day (or week, depending on our host). What follows is always a delicious feast.
During the last three months, we’ve been traveling around Europe and enjoying many homemade meals.
Now, before I overload you with pictures of all the homemade goodness, I have some questions for you:
What do you cook while traveling?
What do you like to make when guests come over for dinner?
What’s your quick and simple go to meal?
Okay, now you can dig in…..

That is one crazy-awesome array of food photos!
Man you had some amazing meals! I want to travel with you :)
Would you like to be my personal travel chef? I’m a vegetarian and I always end up making pasta, sandwiches, and rice and beans. I hope you have an international vegan restaurant in the works!
That is quite an array of travelers food! What kinds of places do you find to make some of this? The closest I ever come to cooking when traveling was getting a baguette and some veggies from a market to make a cheap, fresh sandwich.
I agree with you on loving to make your own meals. Sometimes it’s tiring, but it’s often much more rewarding.
I love making up recipes, and I love to cook myself or with my boyfriend (who eats meat, but when he’s with me we always cook strictly vegetarian/vegan meals). Like me he feels that cooking vegetarian/vegan is way more creative than cooking with meat, which is great!
Cooking is great, it relaxes me a bit, I love it more than simply going to a restaurant. To be honest, restaurants aren’t really my thing (unless on vacation), I always get a little anxious in a restaurant, I don’t know why exactly :P
I like to cook when I travel too…this morning I got up early and made a vegetable and vegan pesto soup. You can make it thin, to have in a thermos on the go, or blend it thick and serve it with crusty bread for a really hearty meal :D Soup is the best! Especially if you’re travelling somewhere with a less than clement climate.
Your homemade food looks just as nice as restaurant food. I usually don’t have access to a kitchen when I travel, so I rely a lot on avocado and tomato sandwiches!
It looks great, Jill!
