How special your host was a native and made authentic Egyptian meals for you. I remember you said they may be moving out of Egypt, are they out? Any thoughts on the current revolution?

I want a date now. And a kitten.

Wow! what a facinating post. Thanks for sharing. Egypt looks like nothing I've ever experienced...funny, I'm saying that when all I've seen is the food...but for me...what else is there?! ;-) Very interesting about the couch surfing too. Was it just one in total or one VEGAN couch offerer? I'd love to go to Eygpt. Did you find it safe in the present political climate?

I've got to get over my obsession with visiting America and explore! Thanks Jill & John

I am going to tell you a secret that I have not told ANYONE yet.

Since I was 5 years old, I was obsessed with ancient Egypt.
I taught myself hieroglyphics in 4th grade (I still remember the alphabet).
I read every Egypt book in the library, I watched every Egypt tv show, I wished Zahi Hawass could be my grandpa or something.

Just over one month ago, after 26 years of waiting, I BOOKED A TRIP TO EGYPT. Matt and I bought plane AND tour tickets for a 9-day trek through Egypt, complete with Nile cruise. We were scheduled to depart April 1st.

And then...revolution.
DAMNIT.
Mubarak was in power for 30 frickin' years, and now, NOW of all times, this happens.
Matt and I are seeing if we can get our money back for the trip. The tour company wants to keep our $400 deposit. I'm not cool with that.

UGH. Ok, sorry to bitch, but my heart is basically broken. Oh, Egypt...I came SO CLOSE! :'(

Thanks for the terrific description of Egyptian vegan foods. Everything sounds so good. I've had ful in a Lebanese restaurant and it's one of my favorite dishes. The stuffed zucchini is cool — too bad we can't buy them hollowed out here!

What great meals! I was in Cairo several years ago (vegetarian, not vegan, at the time) and my hosts served me lots and lots of rice and starchy foods. I left the country very bloated. I like your eating experience better. :)

That kitty is ADORABLE!
