Wanna hear a cool idea? Wouldn’t it be fun to start a monthly meet up where a bunch of people make vegan cakes and get together on a Sunday to eat cake, have a coffee or tea, chat and relax? It’s simple but just so perfect. In Berlin, there is a monthly event called Fika Berlin that brings together a group of people who want to enjoy all of these simple pleasures without all of the commercialization.

The word fika is actually Swedish and comes from the saying fika-zeit, which means coffee break. The Fika Berlin group explains fika can mean different things to different people, for them it stands for:
I = Ideas to live by
K = NO Killing for a cake
A = A social gathering with vegan cake, music and coffee

On the Fika Berlin Facebook group, they make it clear that these events are not meant to be a cake binge, it’s more about bringing like-minded people together to enjoy good company. They also note these events can be accompanied by a program of music, films, lectures, etc.

The prices for the cakes, cupcakes, coffee, tea, milkshakes and fruit smoothies are pay-what-you-can, with the suggested donation being €1.50 Euro ($1.91 USD).
The Cakes!
I’m not sue how the organizers and volunteers manage to bake enough cakes without requesting everyone attending contribute something, but they did a great job and there was more than enough cake for everyone to enjoy several slices. I should also mention that I was very impressed with the quality and creativity I found in the cakes. They had so many varieties and I liked every one I tried, even the cakes made with tofu!

I adore this idea and think it’s absolutely wonderful. It would be great to see more events like this hosted around the world. People in Berlin are quite lucky to have so many nice community spaces. I’m thinking about how I can start something similar in my town, and you should too!
Fika Berlin
Fika Berlin events are held on the third Sunday of every month in Neukölln at Projektraum H 48, Hermannstraße 48, 2. HH, 1. They start at 2:00 p.m. and go until the cake and conversation run out. the Simply Raw people in Ottawa host a monthly and free potluck like this…although it’s for any kind of raw vegan food, not just desserts.
