Maja’s Deli is one of the few restaurants in Berlin that falls somewhere between fast food and fancy. It’s pretty causal, but has a really nice atmosphere, healthy dishes, and affordable prices.
In the mood for a big plate of vegetables, I ordered the surprise salad. It turned out to be a generous portion of greens, carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, strawberries, tofu and sunflower seeds. I really liked that some of the veggies were raw, but the mushrooms, zucchini, and tofu were cooked. Everything was topped with a simple balsamic dressing. I finished every last bite and left with a big smile on my face.
Sadly, John’s order didn’t turn out to be quite so nice. He picked the tempeh sandwich, which looked really yummy but was lacking in taste. The bread was too thick and dry. The tempeh didn’t have any flavour and was so incredibly salty he couldn’t eat it. The veggies were fresh but that wasn’t enough to save us from leaving more than half the sandwich behind.
Before setting off to explore Berlin for the day, we ordered a piece of the vegan cheese cake to go. It looked really good but had the texture and taste of a big cube of tofu. Yuck! The chocolate bits on top and bottom were good, but we couldn’t handle more than one bite each.
I’ve heard positive things about Maja’s other desserts so don’t be afraid to give one of their pies, cakes, cookies or muffins a try.
The menu at Maja’s is said to change often and feature different specials in addition to their regular selection of sandwiches and salads. The prices are really reasonable, €4.00 Euros ($5.09 USD) for sandwiches and €3.80 Euros ($4.83 USD) for salads. The desserts are also well priced at about €2.50 ($3.18 USD) each.

I like the cow sign – wonderful! And in the last photo, the large knife on the wall.
thanks for the honesty.
I’ve never been a fan of vegan cheesecakes… though I never liked cheese cheesecake either.
I love it when the salad turns out to be a better option than the sandwich option! Just so satisfying…
Sorry to hear that the tempeh sandwich and cheesecake disappointed. The pictures of the restaurant online look great though. Maybe the cook had a bad day?
Your salad does look quite delicious though. Now I’m getting hungry!
Me too. I went there few years ago. I did not like their desserts. They taste like tofu. I know what tofu tastes like.
I’ve also blogged about this as well.
