@Dana, don't be nervous, Hong Kong is especially easy and there are many well-documented and tasty vegetarian places. In Beijing and Shanghai, you might actually need to use some of what you've got here in the article, but there are great vegan meals to be had throughout both cities. I just got back from Beijing and I ate many, many wonderful meals at both veg and non-veg restaurants. Check out http://facebook.com/morethansalad for pics from that trip and feel free to email me if you have any questions at dan@morethansalad.com. Consider using Couchsurfing to meet some locals who can help you out. Have fun!

Could someone help me with soy sauce. I am gluten-free and cannot find any tamari (japanese gluten-free sauce) anywhere?
I ma based in Fuzhou and the food is loaded with gluten/wheat! I am completely shocked as I thought I would have so much choice but turns out I can hardly eat anything and locals do not understand gluten-free and wheat-free.
Help??
I tried exoplaining it to someone who speaks english and chinese but they really do not get it.

@lotsa green, although it is of course always possible for errors to be made or misunderstandings to occur when language is an issue, I was with a local at the meal you mentioned and I'm pretty confident the meal in question was vegan. The "soy thingy" in question had more the texture of soy chicken or something like that and we were assured there were no eggs in it. That said, traveling in China or anywhere as a vegan, you always face the risk of consuming something that isn't purely vegan even in a vegetarian restaurant although I'd say that risk exists outside China as well. It's always on each of us to ask as many questions as we must to make ourselves feel comfortable and confident in what we're being served.

The 'soy thingy' looks like egg tofu, tofu curdle with egg in it, beaten and than filled into a tube and cooked to turn firm..sliced for a meal..looks the same

Haha, very brave to request the noodle soup with only a piece of paper. One time I saw the staff scooping pieces of meat out of the broth on behalf of a similar request. I'm glad you liked the article and hope you find it useful in China. I will actually be in China myself for 2 months this summer and I bet I will have some new and interesting pictures and stories to share upon my return!

This is awesome, thanks! I'll be spending a month in China this summer, and I'm up to the challenge... especially as I'll be with my fluent daughter, who lives in rural Yunnan Province! She recently texted me: "mom, a foreign vegan came into the noodle shop today and handed the chef a card that said, 'noodle soup, no meat, no egg.'" Must have been taking a tip from you!

It may also be helpful to take a few instant soups or Pot Noodles for those times when it’s impossible to find something to eat.In a vegan meal, there will not be any meat of any kind, including beef, poultry, pork or even seafood. There will also not be any products from meat such as dairy.I just returned from a trip to Chiang Mai and Pai with Jeff. While there was plenty of veggie food I was starting to get a bit tired of veggie fried rice so I did occasionally eat some seafood but generally SE Asia is so good with the choice of veggie options.
