One word of advice to anyone traveling to Turkey: If you can, avoid a drink called Salgam (pronounced SHAL-gam). If you are offered some, drink enough to be polite.

Looks like cherry Kool-Aid, comes in a jug like cherry Kool-Aid, they drink it on a hot day like cherry Kool-Aid...

But it's actually pickled turnip juice.

It's vegan though...

Axa - oh, I definitely gave them a hard time... I gave some things back because they were just too expensive. I don't know if I really bargained, but they for sure knew I wasn't going to pay the first price they gave me!!

Perfect timing! I'm taking a two week trip to Turkey in November and the Turkish friend that I'm visiting has already found some great vegan stuff... but I'm psyched to know that some vegans made out well there already! :)

Hi, I was just wondering: Did you bargain? The prices you say sound way too high to me! I was in Istanbul some time ago and went to the same market with Turkish friends. They bargained for me and although it was not too cheap (it is Istanbul after all) i thought it was not too expensive either... So just wondering...
