After a morning of touring London, seeing Big Ben, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and Saint Jame’s Park, we’d worked up an appetite. We headed to Vitao for a cheap and healthy lunch. Everything they serve is vegan, and most of it’s organic.
Here’s a picture of everything that got crammed into my medium-sized takeout box, a combination of food from the hot and cold buffet. On the bottom right, you can see a white square of seaweed lasagna that was made with kombu seaweed, shiitake mushrooms, lentil sprouts, red pepper, soy, nutritional yeast, onion, herbs, and olive oil. Beside it, there’s shepherd’s pie, made with sweet potatoes. All along the outer edges, there’s lots of raw salads and sprouts squeezed in. There was some delicious coleslaw packed in there too.
John’s picks were from the cold buffet. He jammed an impressive amount of potatoes, grilled vegetables, rice, beans, salad and sprouts into his medium takeout box.
We were really pleased with the selection of healthy, wholefood and organic options at Vitao. Everything we tried was delicious and left us feeling incredibly nourished, with enough energy to continue our sightseeing.
Looking at this picture, the pricing structure for the lunch buffet seems straight forward. However, this was one of many signs that had us thinking a little too hard. There were three buffets. Two were staffed, one hot and one cold. There was also one self-serve cold buffet. There were two kinds of takeout boxes, plastic and biodegradable, as well as pay per plate and per serving options. Only the biodegradable boxes could be used for the staffed buffet. Confusing, isn’t it!? The complicated pricing structure is explained here.
We settled on one medium box from the hot buffet for £4.80 GBP ($6.92 USD) and one medium box from the cold, self-serve buffet for £4.00 GBP ($5.77 USD). In the end, I think the options we chose were priced for takeout but we sat down and ate in the restaurant. At this point, we were too confused and hungry to care. It was a great meal and I’d go back again if I had the chance.

This food looks absolutely divine! Why can’t there be more restaurants like this? It seriously just boggles my mind that most people would rather eat the junk posing as food in a McDonalds than the REAL food here, you know, the kind that actually feeds your body what it needs! And I love that they have boxes that are biodegradable, finally some smart business people! There is hope yet for the world!
Yum, this is one place in London I haven’t tried yet. I’ll definitely try to go there soon to try that lasagne though!
Went here just before I left Lodon for good and yes teh food was DIVINE and actually inspire me to maybe own a restaurant like this too one day. OMG

and the beauty is there are more places like this in London !!!
This place looks amazing. I’m in London right now for another month or so and will definitely try and make my way here for a lunch.
Thanks for the awesome photos.
Looks like you have ate your vegan way around the city now and although it’s my home city I cooked at home mostly last time I lived here (6 years ago) so would love any other must go restaurants.
